Album Review: Thy Veils – Next Forever

I’ve made no secret of my love of Romanian electronic pop outfit Thy Veils. Their music has featured a few times before on on this blog and now I have to chance to share their new album, Next Forever.

By Graeme Smith

Thy Veils make music quite unlike anything I’ve heard before, equal parts gritty and ethereal, soft yet danceable. It’s proved a big hit in their native Romania, and I think the rest of the world needs to know about it.

Next Forever is an album that brings together the mysteries of the human mind with the unknowns of the universe. It sends us out into space, urging us to connect with the conceptual cosmic pulse. It creates a utopian vision of the far future where all are at one.

It’s taken seven years for this album to come to fruition and in that time their sound has transitioned notably. Musically we get an intoxicating mix of dreamy, driving and dynamic electronica.

Things open with the mystical strings of A High Age, an eight and a half minute odyssey that brings together ethereal vocals, glitchy beats, space-age synths and a sense of the everlasting.

From there we are treated to lively moments like Sunvault and Influx alongside more chilled numbers like Upstream and title track Next Forever. Fluttering Light gives us some simmering spirituality while Morph has a sultry groove. Mountain Fire closes the journey with some lingering jazz.

Thy Veils are a truly unique act who aren’t afraid to reinvent themselves. It’s clear that Next Forever is a labour of love, and it gives us an absorbing narrative while never disappearing within itself. It’s simply a masterclass.

Featuring on Next Forever is Daniel Dorobantu on keys, electronics, lyrics, production and visuals, Alira Mun and Maria Hojda on vocals and lyrics, Manuela Marchis on vocals, keys, lyrics and idioglossia, Petre Ionutescu on trumpet, Ana Pieloiu on guitar, Mircea Ardeleanu Jr. on bass, vocals and percussion, Anuka Kontridze on tabla, and Radu Pieloui on drums and percussion. Attila Lukinich provided the mixing and mastering.
