Our Life In Hibernation is the new EP release from Toronto, Canada-based singer songwriter Lando Flakes, exploring the sense of stagnation that comes from being in a doomed relationship.
By Graeme Smith
Lando has been penning songs since the age of fourteen, inspired by the likes of Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley, and has a degree in Creative Writing. His love of language comes through strongly in his new EP. He likens a bad relationship to a kind of hibernation brought about by fear of change and I must admit I was feeling his every word across its five tracks.
The EP opens with Nothing To Do With You and we are instantly struck by its raw and intimate style. Lando’s vocals are soulful and compelling as they deliver a visceral, cynical message against a backdrop of acoustic guitar. Taking My Life follows, providing an entirely different side of his sound with some bright, jangly pop. Its chanting chorus simply brims with a sense of release and catharsis.
Just a Feeling introduces some funky drums and bass during its pleading tale of seeking romance. Pile of Words is a folky moment with an engaging rawness and some surprise experimentation. Hurricane Days then wraps things up with an introspective piano-led number that you won’t want to let go of.
The authentic and relatable song writing on display in Our Life in Hibernation is second to none, and Lando brings the emotion of it all beautifully to life through his vocals, compositions and ability to weave a story. It’s a fully-realised EP that acts as the perfect introduction to his music. He’s certainly an artist on which I’ll be keeping a close eye.
Our Life In Hibernation was self-produced by Lando who also recorded the EP in his bedroom. The EP is out now, available to buy from Lando’s website. You can check it out below.
