Anglesey rockers Dying Habit return with a new album

Having been appearing on our pages since 2022, Dying Habit are a band who we always have time for. Their new album is called The Chaos of Silence.

By Graeme Smith

Based on the island of Anglesey in North Wales, Dying Habit are vocalist Nathan Jones, drummer Mark Jones, bassist Daniel Garner, and guitarist Alan Hart. Their debut single Unrealities was released in 2018, followed by their debut album Until the Air Runs Out in 2020.

Their new album The Chaos of Silence sees them working with producer Russ Hayes, recording the album in their native North Wales. Together they create a rich and atmospheric hard rock sound right from the severe riffs of album opener 24 Eyes. Building through a percussive verse the track arrives at an expansive chorus complete with passionate vocals. It’s a rousing start.

Vibrator brings with it some machine-gun riffs that simmer in the verse before boiling over during an anthemic chorus. A Forest in Floods bristles with a dark anger before Hard to Say No rounds off the album’s early listening with a smouldering and relentless highlight.

Other highlights include the gentle, atmospheric and folksy The Cliffs of Nowhere, the nihilistic Headlocks, and the spacey, layered Celestial. Echoes closes the album in a contemplative style. There’s a vulnerability to its lyrics that mean they will stick with you while hopeful notes swirl among a certain melancholia.

It’s difficult to breathe life in a genre like hard rock and, with a dedicated fanbase, it’s always tempting to play it safe. With their new album, Dying Habit have thrown caution to the wind and the result is stunning. Without losing that headbanging edge, they’ve given us a varied collection, full of storytelling and emotion. If you like your rock on the heavier side, you need to check out this album.
