Nova Soon ruminates on assisted dying in deeply personal new single

Real name Noah de Grunwald, Nova Soon is a London-based space-folk artist who penned his upcoming EP Goodbyetown in the wake of his father’s death.

By Graeme Smith

As well as watching his father deteriorate, Noah cared for his mother during a prolonged illness, and the profound emotional impact of both events is explored through Goodbyetown. It’s a collection opened by Antarctica, an acoustic anthem that expresses his pro-assisted dying viewpoint eloquently.

There’s an immediate sense of intimacy about the track, created by the ambient sound of footsteps on floorboards and delicate acoustic guitar. Noah has a vocal delivery reminiscent of Leonard Cohen in his younger days, and a similar way of telling a story through poetry. As the track progresses, the instrumental builds, as does the emotion, to a dizzying climax.

Antarctica was produced by James Smithells. It’s out now and you can check it out below.
