Brisbane, Australia’s Liposuction have graced these pages a couple of times before with killer singles She Hz and Pour Some Dollars On Me. Now they’re back with a debut extended collection. It’s called Octopussy.

Fronted by Sunday Hunter, and featuring bassist Shannon Kilcoyne and drummer James Hurwood, Liposuction are an exciting band on the up. Both She Hz and Pour Some Dollars On Me impressed me with their storytelling lyrics and norm-breaking take on alternative rock and pop. Both tracks feature on their new EP, Octopussy.
Completing its six tracks are title track Octopussy, Boring Residue, Hell Hole, and Guns Blazing. The former opens things with tales of the macabre and monster riffs. Things don’t let up during this opening gambit that lays down the gauntlet for what’s to come.
Boring Residue is a swaggering, blistering number that nicely sets up first half highlight, Pour Some Dollars On Me. Its rousing, groovy pop is utterly irresistable.
Hell Hole is an anthem to life’s low points while Guns Blazing is a moody, industrial attack on a world that underestimates women. She Hz rounds things off with some brooding, cantering hard rock that will stick with you.
With their new EP, Liposuction are making a hell of a statement. It’s six tight tracks that show range while keeping true to the band’s rebellious style. Sunday’s delivery oozes with character and charisma, and the trio clearly have a lot of chemistry together. If they keep going like they are, they could be the next big thing on the international rock scene.
Octopussy was recorded between Brisbane Recording Studio and Hunting Ground Studios by Blair Conlon. Jason Milhouse of Recordworks Studios did the mixing and mastering. It’s out now via Galactic Granny Records. You can give it a listen below.
