EP Review: Mylo Choy – SUMMER PROJECTS (PART TWO)

As you might have guessed by now, SUMMER PROJECTS (PART TWO) is the second EP in the same series from Mylo Choy, following on from 2022’s SUMMER PROJECTS (PART ONE). The New York artist has created a delightful five track record here, keeping things short and sweet so that Mylo’s listeners come back to her for more new music. So, what did we think of the EP?

By Jane Howkins

The first track is dreamy number Smallest Things. It’s extremely introspective, seeing Mylo’s sultry vocals soak the lyrics with sound, colliding nicely with the backing vocals on the chorus. The piano provides the main rhythm and melody for the piece, playing a similar phrase throughout. However, little percussion flourishes and guitar notes litter the track, adding a dose of variety.

Passing By is similar in some ways, seeing a bouncy piano rhythm echo through the track in a lovely way, matched nicely by Mylo’s passionate vocals. The piano may sound simple at first, but it’s actually a really beautiful melody, showing some fantastic songwriting skills. The chorus lets the music really shine through, building on the previous themes without taking over the track too much. This is definitely a must listen from me!

Nothing To Know is another brilliant piece of work. One of the things I love about Mylo’s music is the way she manages to use such a simplistic sound to portray great emotion, and Nothing To Know is no different. The guitar motifs ebb and flow against the faint basslines and drum beats, as the vocals are layered across one another over time, creating something incredibly thought-provoking.

Love On Its Own is the last song proper, bringing the playful piano back into the fold, although it also has a slightly synthesised feel at times. The synths never take over the tune though, instead injecting a small dose of extra happiness into this number, as Mylo’s vocals go from singing into a lovely humming melody. There’s some interesting electronic strings playing around in the background on occasion too, creating an unusual musical texture that really works wonders!

The final track is Outro: Diorama – despite being an outro, it’s still worthy of your attention – particularly if you’ve enjoyed the rest of the EP as much as I have! It’s one of the more up-tempo tunes here, seeing waves of instrumentation follow a familiar pattern underneath Mylo’s killer vocal delivery. This track may even suit those into their EDM music, so make sure you give it a go!

In all honesty, SUMMER PROJECTS (PART TWO) is a lovely piece of work – it’s fairly minimalist at times, in terms of both the production quality and instrumentation, but it all works surprisingly well. Hopefully Mylo Choy will produce a third iteration in 2026!
