Evan Page embraces uncertainty and shows resilience in debut five track EP, In The Front Seat.
By Graeme Smith
Evan’s debut EP started as a month-long song writing session in his basement studio in which he cut five demos. Taking them to Side 3 Studios in Denver, Colorado, USA earlier this year, In The Front Seat was born.
Inspired as much by The Beach Boys and contemporary artists, it’s no surprise that Evan’s music has a timeless quality to it. His songs show an emotional maturity that belies his modest sixteen years on this planet, and he is already showing a lot of talent as a musician. One feels that the EP is only the start of what will become a successful career in music.
Appropriately enough, the record begins with Where It Starts. Evan’s soulful vocals are immediately on display as they deliver relatable lyrics that speak of emotional tumult. The instrumental is driving, combining pop, rock and dance during a particularly pleasing chorus.
80 Degrees chills things off with a laidback, storytelling effort before House On The Hill provides a mid-EP highlight. It takes the record in a moody, acoustic direction as its tale of introspection unfolds. Every note is infused with a tremendous amount of atmosphere.
I Tried brings with it some synth and soul during its tale of heartbreak. Or Go With Him then rounds off the EP with a simmering classic rock number with ponderous guitar and soaring vocals. It’s a final highlight.
I’m very impressed with what Evan is doing. He’s taking the pop genre and making it his own, pushing boundaries musically and putting plenty of himself in his lyrics. It’s simply unbelievable that he’s still so young. I’m excited to see where he goes!
