Not long ago, Rachel Croft left our city for London in order to further her career and she’s done well out of it. Last night at The Crescent saw her return to our city for the first time since.

Chatting to a fellow enthusiast, we agreed that what Rachel has that sets her apart is presence. I noticed this when I first saw her walk into the room to do a solo acoustic set during York’s Oxjam ten years ago.
She’s come a long way from the acoustic folk you might have once heard her perform busking on the streets of York. Last night she confessed to always being a rock chick, and her new sound is very much what she has always aspired to create.
The night was put on by Kent-based Americana lovers Black Deer Live. While there were hints of Americana throughout the evening, it very much took a back seat to classic, swaggering rock. The Tom Sheldon Trio set the course, with noodling guitar licks and tricks learned from Hendrix. They brought the fun and energy needed to warm up the Crescent crowd who were full of anticipation to see Rachel’s return.

With a slick turnaround between acts, there was barely a wait before she came on. That meant she was able to play an audacious 90-minute set. I can’t remember the last time I saw one; they’re usually reserved for arenas. She and her band of Londoners were good value for it, playing a dense run through of her recent singles, rendered with the energy that only live music can deliver.
As I mentioned, Rachel has a natural presence but last night it felt more refined. She busted moves, engaged with the audience, and threw herself around the stage during her livelier numbers. Even the two songs she did solo filled the stage and the venue.

I’m, of course, biased, but it’s clear that Rachel Croft has something. She’s a talented songwriter who is able to cut through to the emotional heart of the topics she covers. She’s able to bring it to the stage and is building a devoted fanbase online. I think one day she’ll be looked back on as an overnight success, but we know all the hard work that’s gone into getting her this far. Long may it continue!
