Genre-blending American artist Kimberly Morgan York returns to our pages with new album, FUN.
By Graeme Smith
Almost exactly a year a go to the day, I shared Kimberly’s EP Devils Songs and Other Such Nonsense to this blog. I remember being impressed at the time by her folklore-infused collection, rich with country rock swagger and seductive vocals.
Her new album marks her evolution as an artist, marrying her Kentucky roots with a ’70s pop sheen. This is typified by its vibrant title track which begins the record with a cantering rhythm, oodles of energy and visceral lyrics. It’s a memorable start.
People Don’t Like It strips things back with a plodding country arrangement with lyrics that are full of philosophy and encouragement. What Happened In California is a sultry, storytelling number with plenty of soul. Mama’s Done Lost Her Mind closes the album’s first half with its devastating lyrics and a subtle, cathartic groove that will have you swaying along.
Best is a slow ballad that’s full of heartache and folk sentiments. Coming Down keeps things on the melancholic side during its soul-searching before Hold Back the Tears livens things a little in a timeless effort. Still Waters closes the album by letting it all go in a reflective moment where Kimberly’s voice shines.
There’s something unique yet familiar about Kimberly Morgan York’s music that means I get excited every time a new release of hers lands on my virtual desk. Her new album is no exception. She marshals classic influences and modern sentiments perfectly, telling us astute, heart-breaking tales while compelling us to dance through the tears. Her charisma comes through in every note. FUN is an album that will have you coming back for more, again and again.
FUN was recorded at Gold Diggers in Los Angeles, USA with producer David Barbe. It’s out now and you can give it a listen below.
