The Avelons release storytelling new EP, The Gallows

The Avelons expand the story of their character ‘Blondie’ with new three track concept EP.

A Newcastle-based indie rock band, The Avelons previously featured on our blog in June 2024 with their tale of infatuation, Since Monday. They’ve supported the likes of Vistas and Tom A Smith and have now released their debut EP into the world. It’s called The Gallows.

Inspired by the work of Sergio Leonne and spaghetti westerns, the EP includes previously released single Blondie and new tracks The Prequel and title track The Gallows. Both tracks expand the story of the title character ‘Blondie.’

The Prequel kicks things off with a smouldering, atmospheric rock intro before some lively riffs come in. An understated groove gets the listener moving while powerful and expressive vocals deliver the story. The Avelons truly capture the spirit of Britrock while bringing plenty of themselves to the genre and this is typified by this strong opener.

Blondie sits at the heart of the EP and gives us an urgent rock number that’s rich with pulsating percussion, memorable riffs and charismatic vocals. Its lyrics paint a picture of a lost soul in the expanses of the desert, shaking off the desolation through a vibrant, emotional chorus.

Title track The Gallows rounds off the EP in slow-burning fashion. A simmering, ambient intro gradually gets us to narrative rich track with echoing guitar and plenty of soul-searching.

The Avelons’ new EP is high concept, but its compositions give us plenty of lowdown and dirty indie rock. They’re a band that truly have all they need to make a splash on the UK rock scene and I love how they’re bringing something different with this EP. Keep an eye on them.

You can catch The Avelons playing live at Think Tank, Newcastle on 23 November 2024.
