Discovery: local folk rockers Beth Pilling and the Bootleggers stun with debut single

Beth Pilling and the Bootleggers bring their Yorkshire coast sound to our blog for the first time.

By Graeme Smith

Based in Bridlington, Beth Pilling and The Bootleggers are new to our blog thanks to their debut single, Spinning.

The track is a significant on. As Beth puts it, it the first thing she’s written that isn’t a “dainty love song” and confronts the practice of spiking drinks and more broadly attitudes towards women. It’s a track that combines raw acoustic folk rock with characterful vocals. Beth, who is influenced by the likes of of Lily Allen, Joan Jett, and Florence + The Machine, truly is the star of the show, giving us rich storytelling with an East Yorkshire twang. Meanwhile, the track’s instrumental stays vibrant with a sinister undercurrent.

Spinning was recorded live at Duality Studio in University of Hull. It’s out now and you can give it a listen below.
