Pianist and composer Igor Yakovenko pays tribute to a Russian great with his newly released collection, Promenade.
By Graeme Smith
Promenade is a a tribute to Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky which marked its 150th anniversary in 2024. The opening refrain of Promenade is unmistakable, yet it also feels a little like hearing it for the first time thanks to Igor’s reimagining.
As his pieces proceed, they build, swirling and overlapping, creating a striking sense of drama and drawing on his background in jazz as much as classical. From title track Promenade onwards, he gives us light and dark with the piano, always infusing each composition with his personal flair.
The album is out now via Melody and you can give it a listen below.
