Discovery: Hidden Things delights with cynical indie pop album

Coming to our attention through their third album release, Caught Up In It, Hidden Things is an act who is new to our blog.

By Graeme Smith

Caught Up In It is a collection of tracks inspired by how comedy comes from misery. The cynicism simply bursts forth across its ten tracks, starting right from the off. Grievances is a biting track disguised as a breezy indie pop song and goes a lot of the way to demonstrating the layers the record has to offer.

Back Again has a classic rock feel to it, something akin to a stripped-back Thin Lizzy. Bed You Made canters along while being weighed down by a world-weariness. Think It Through introduces a touch of Americana during a contemplative moment while No Shame rounds off the album’s first half in gentle and jaunty style.

The album’s second half gives us the edgy, Elvis Costello-esque Victimless Crime, the ponderous Damage Will Tell, and the airy pop of Write Me Off. Secret Paradise is raucous and punky before Taking The Long Way closes the album in bouncing, Strokes-like fashion.

These are cynical times, and sometimes you’ve got to fight fire with fire. Hidden Things’ new album is the perfect soundtrack for those of us who are fed up with the world’s craziness.

Caught Up In It is out now via Seehurst Records and is available to buy as a digital album on Bandcamp. You can give it a listen below.
