Love Ghost is a boundary-pushing artist to which we have been returning time and time again. First featuring on our blog as part of Jane’s Trapped round-up in January 2023, his music has been all over our pages since.
By Graeme Smith
Most recently, I shared his and Skold’s collaborative album, Love Ghost x SKOLD, in a review in which I referred to him as a “voice of a generation.” His latest release, Memento Mori, adds to that claim, blending emo trap, alternative rock and Latin urban for an emotional and existential journey.
The album kicks off with another collab, this time seeing Love Ghost team up with Katsu Energy for a melodically heavy moment called DECOY. The vocals bring the emotion while big guitar riffs and pacy percussion provide the backdrop. Altogether it’s a perfect alternative pop moment, and the lyrics hold nothing back.
It’s one of several collabs across an album which sees Love Ghost join forces with Plata Shail, DEER, Ardis, Young Aleexx, xkori and El Vermumcito. Add to that a cavalcade of producers, you get a rich and diverse collection, but perhaps it shines the brightest during his solo effort, Cocaine Chronicles, which cuts a confessional number that screws with composition and ends up strikingly bluesy.
The Monster Inside strips things back, giving us plenty of vulnerability as Love Ghost and Plata Shail’s vocals interplay in English and Spanish. Spiritual Warfare bristles with raw rock energy and visceral lyrics. TWOSIDES, which has featured on our blog before, sees Love Ghost and Ardis showing us their delicate side. IMPOSTER marches along with melancholic storytelling before SOMEWHERE UP ON MARS closes the album with a languid and lingering final chapter.
With each new release, Love Ghost’s music grows in both stature and importance. I have no doubt he’s going to be huge once the world catches onto his sound.
Memento Mori is set for release 28 February 2025.
