A post-punk and new wave band hailing from Portland, Oregon, USA, Creature Party are new to our pages thanks to their latest EP, The Meaning of Being.
By Graeme Smith
With a sound akin to Devo or The B-52’s, Creature Party are an act that are seriously unserious. Combining clever punk with the ludicrously kitsch, they make music that will grab your attention.
Playboy Mansion Monkey Bite opens their new EP, at once showing us the band’s storytelling chops and lively sound. Characterful vocals prove the highlight during a track that also has an earworm chorus and plenty of raucous energy.
Tell Me gallops along, hitting hard with hits rhythm and emotional vocals. UFO is suitably mysterious, channelling a ’60s B-movie aesthetic during its twisted tale. Act Up is a moody moment, showing us the band’s hard rock side. 2 Cool 4 Fun is deliciously offbeat and quirky. Quicksand closes the EP in soaring style.
In an ever-increasingly serious world, there’s a shortage of party acts like Creature Party. The band are proving you can have a good time while still making a point, as their new EP demonstrates. It’s a riot!
The Meaning of Being is out now and you can give it a listen below. If you’re in Portland, you can catch the band live at the Kenton Club on 5 April 2025.
