Discovery: The Ram tells his story with classic new album

I Am Nowhere, I Am Everywhere is the autobiographical new album from singer-songwriter and York Calling discovery, The Ram.

By Graeme Smith

Inspired by time spent in his two homes on either side of the US, Carlsbad, California-based Mark “The Ram” O’Donnell’s new album has a tremendous sense of movement and adventure about it. Yet, at its heart are tales of family life.

We are introduced to the album by Listen to the Cold, a tribute to his father written at his family farm in Downington, Pennsylvania. The lyrics bring a wholesome, nostalgic story to life, delivered by gritty vocals and backed by an atmospheric folk rock instrumental.

From there we get the honky-tonk The Moon’s Loving Light, the groovy Love Is a Terrible Thing to Waste and the moody, bluesy Unbound. Flip Jam provides a mysterious mid-album interlude before we launch into the record’s second half which includes the slow-burning, psychedelic Everything, the sultry and philosophical Perpetual Change and the simmering and intimate Join Along. Warmth of the Fire rounds things off in smouldering style.

The Ram has a wonderfully classic approach to his music yet it also feels like he’s bringing something new to the American Songbook. His new album is nine tracks that show us who he is, and runs the full gamut of emotions.

I Am Nowhere, I Am Everywhere is out now and you can give it a listen below.
