Discovery: CHAD charm with beautiful debut album

Blending together ’90s indie pop with modern dream pop, CHAD are new to our blog through their long-awaited debut album, Mid.

By Graeme Smith

Mid is an album written in the spirit of youth, and you get that sense straight away from its slow-burning opener, Girl. There’s a hopefulness about it, but also a wistfulness, giving us the mix of emotions and endorphins that only memories of being young can.

It’s an album that took its time arriving. Portland, Oregon, USA-based CHAD have been playing together for years. Still, it’s certainly proven worth the wait.

In its single Park n Ride we get a skateboarding anthem which, of course, is a highlight. A bright synth-led instrumental immediately generates nostalgia before soft, charismatic vocals come in. It builds to a memorable chorus. Other highlights include the dreamy Train, the rip-roaring guitar solo of A Friend, and the wonderfully atmospheric Taco Shark.

Blue Highway treats us to a romantic duet between lead singer Sarah Lane and drummer Trevor Greely while Rule The World closes the album in gentle yet vibrant style.

CHAD’s new album is one of the most beautiful collections I’ve heard in awhile. They have a distinct sound which is easy to love. Lane’s vocals are the star of the show and are ably supported by Alex Widner’s synth, Zach Whiton’s bass and guitar, Trevor Greely’s dums, and Josh Lambe’s and Mori Dinauer’s bass.

Mid is out now and you can give it a listen below.
