Discovery: Kevin Caldwell writes folk for 2025 in new album

If you’re wondering what folk singers are singing about in 2025, then Kevin Caldwell‘s new album Soulcialism is a good place to start.

By Graeme Smith

Soulcialism is a collection of folk songs in the purest sense of the word, reflecting on society in an unflinchingly critical way. The concept is typified by album opener This Land Was Your Land which unapologetically calls out the colonisation of America, taking its land from the original inhabitants of the land. Race, poverty and much else comes under scrutiny across its eleven tracks.

Much of it dwells on contemporary issues such as deportation orders and Israel’s actions in Gaza. Caldwell penned the whole album in two weeks in January 2025, the day after Martin Luther King Day, so was able to reflect on events that have been unfolding over recent months. Talkin’ maga Paranoid Blues and Pardon Me stand out in particular in this regard.

Surfin’ in What Used to be the Usa is a lively and poignant highlight while final track Soulcialism Mantra strikes a consolidatory tone as it reminds us of what we all have in common.

Caldwell turned to the ’60s folk scene for his style, but his subject matter is right up to date, meaning he should find fans among lovers of the old and the new. His aim is to inspire the next generation of folk singers and Soulcialism should go a long way towards that aim.

The album is out now and you can give it a listen below.
