Andi Jackson breaks ground with Avant Garde new album

Manchester’s Andi Jackson has always had a penchant for the Avant Garde and the strange, yet his latest, Tangible Lines, might be his most out there effort yet.

By Graeme Smith

Tangible Lines opens with minimal ambience and from there dirges on, bringing in subtle layers and textures. The album is arranged into ten “movements” which each have their own character but make up a whole. In Movement 2, things get more severe with speaker-threatening distortion over hypnotic, metallic rhythms. By Movement 3, the sound becomes positively alien, bringing to mind the surreal soundtracks of ’70s sci-fi.

The album goes on movement by movement, droning yet rising and falling in unexpected ways. Movement 7 provides a moment of pulsating richness while Movement 9 gets delightfully unhinged. Movement 10 settles things with some natural atmosphere, reminiscent of Umma Gumma-era Pink Floyd.

We’ve been following Jackson’s music since 2021, first featuring his album Sub Horror. In 2023, we followed that up with a share of Electric Departure. His latest is his most ground-breaking to date. It is, undoubtedly, a challenging listen, but a rewarding one for those who give it the time.

Tangible Lines is out now, available to buy on CD or as a digital album via Bandcamp. You can give it a listen below.
