Discovery: YEARN turns vivid dreams into poetic rock in new single

A project by Lily Minke Tahar, YEARN has come to our attention through her vivid dream-inspired new single, Shapeshifter.

Shapeshifter opens with a gentle groove and textures of plucked strings. The understated vocals come in softly at first, then grow in presence. They deliver poetic lyrics before things get rousing and cinematic in the chorus. There’s a touch of Radiohead about it, channelling alternative rock and something a little more off kilter thanks to jazzy undertones.

A psychedelic breakdown mixes things up halfway through, marking a metamorphosis of the track to bright soulful rock. A piano solo and spoken word vocals bring things to a close.

I’ve not heard much like it and that’s always a good thing.

Tahar used to perform under the moniker Minke, and was part of the Seattle, USA-based collective Day Soul Exquisite. She’s taking things in a new direction with her latest project, crafting an exciting sound, and saying plenty with her image-rich lyrics. She’s an artist to which I’m looking forward to getting better acquainted.

Shapeshifter is the title track of YEARN’s new album, set for release on Doe Records 11 July 2025. The single is out now and you can give it a listen below.
