Discovery: York-based debutant Ruby Wheeler captures the soul of country

Based right here in York, Ruby Wheeler is not only a debutant on our pages, but a debutant in the world of recorded music. Wyatt Wayne is her first released single.

By Graeme Smith

With a cantering rhythm and verses rich in narrative, Ruby has captured the soul of country and western with her debut track. Her vocals have a distinctive style which I found mesmerising as the titular character’s unfortunate tale unfolded.

“Wyatt Wayne was born out of my love for country and western storytelling,” says Ruby. “It’s an escape into the cowboy fantasyland inside my head. I wrote this and another song around two years ago, and they both inspired me to start sharing my music. I’ve started with this one because it’s so much fun.”

The track features drums from Joe Douglas, and mixing and mastering by KayDense. The album art is by LinhesDen.

I expect you’ll be seeing a lot more of Ruby Wheeler on these pages. Her music has wit and charm, and she delivers it captivatingly.

Wyatt Wayne is out now. If you love country, it’s a must listen. You can stream it below.
