Opening up about her real-life struggles, Lilith Fair Kid is the debut album from Emily Popli.
By Graeme Smith
Popli named her debut after the women who helped shape her music, bringing together references to Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlin.
The album opens with the sultry and soulful Alight which features Matt Giraud. I was struck early on by Popli’s vocal quality. Her voice is powerful and rich with an emotional depth which makes every word of the ballad hit hard. The lyrics cut right to the point as the track builds to its pleading chorus. It’s a strong start and she does her idols proud.
From there she shares her personal struggles with depression, trauma and finding the joy in life across eight more tracks. Things get smooth and groovy for the timeless Play. Michigan is rousing and poignant. Control has a cinematic bombast that elevates its confessional tale. It’s a highlight.
The Guy Who Got Away doesn’t hold back with the uncomfortable details in its lyrics which makes it a captivating listen. Nothing takes back the power during a fiery moment. Crazy Dream is rich with a certain bittersweet nostalgia. The Elephant closes the album in a metaphor-filled anthemic final highlight.
There’s some real substance to Lilith Fair Kid which sets it apart from its contemporaries. Throughout, Emily Popli wears her influences on her sleeve while bringing plenty of herself and her story to her music. It’s a striking debut, and I await with anticipation what comes next from her.
Lilith Fair Kid is set for release 29 August 2025.
