Greener Grass is the latest in a series of insightful singles from The Muster Point Project.
By Graeme Smith
The project, led by Kevin Franco, has a way of tapping into the deeper meaning of everyday life. In the past we’ve heard about breakups, Southern waitresses, and even the freedom of riding a bicycle.
Franco’s latest rumination is about running away from one’s problems.
“I think a lot of folks can relate to pieces of this story,” he says. “Most of us would rather sidestep life’s hardest moments than stare them down.”
Amen.
In true Muster Point Project style, the message is delivered delicately through some wholesome Americana and clever wordplay.
“When I was writing it, I kept imagining what it might feel like to bail on life’s most difficult chapters, just to chase that greener grass on the other side,” Franco explains. “But as the song evolved, it became clear: the character at its centre isn’t escaping, he’s losing. He’s a coward masquerading as a dreamer.”
The point is driven home by an understated crescendo with soft, soulful vocalisations.
Based across Calgary, Canada and Santiago, Chile, Franco plays bass, guitars, mandolin, percussion, and performs all the vocals on the track. Drums are by Montreal-based drummer Marcelo Effori.
