The ability to capture the energy of a live performance on video is one that’s not to be underestimated, yet singer/songwriter Eyal Erlich does it beautifully with his rendition of All in all.

It’s a track best heard live. Intimate, personal and with a sense of connection, the music and the way its conveyed works hand in hand. Erlich and his band of Omer Hershman, Adi Gigi and Barak Kram create an intoxicating atmosphere. Shut your eyes and you could almost convince yourself that you’re there with them.
As Erlich explained in a recent interview with Top Hitz, All in all was inspired by the heartbreaking story of his lover passing away. He sings the chorus for her and the emotion is powerful.
Musically, he draws inspiration from the Beatles and that influence come through strongly in the track’s slow-burning classic rock. You also get a sense of the country rock artists of America like Creedence Clearwater Revival during its searching, ponderous early groove. I even detected a trace of Radiohead in the simmering rock melange.
Taking its time to develop, Erlich doesn’t start singing until the song is over 90 seconds old. When he does, the soulfulness of his voice proves arresting. It’s interspersed with Hershman’s guitar licks giving us plenty of texture, yet it’s the poetry of the lyrics that really stood out for me. “My fifteen minutes gone up in smoke,” Erlich laments at one point – what a phrase!
Based in Tel Aviv, Isreal, Erlich is already making a name for himself in his home country. There’s a universality about his sound that means it will have international appeal, though. I certainly dig it. The combination of classic rock and modern folk elements makes it an easy yet poignant listen. The lyrics stay with you as they try to mine wisdom through song.
