Alwyn Morrison talks of the long road to his new single

“This track took a long road,” Alwyn Morrison reflects on his latest single, Maybe In Another World.

“I was flying from New York to San Diego and when I got to San Diego, I remember it so clearly, the song just started pouring out of me as I was leaving the airport, I could hear it in my mind — and I remember thinking: I need to get to my hotel room ASAP to write this down because otherwise I’ll forget it.”

Thus began the story of Maybe In Another World, the emotional new single by Alwyn Morrison.

Opening with acoustic guitar that tugs at the heartstrings, you at once know you’re in for an intimate ride with the single. It provides a lush backdrop to the lyrics, which speak of missed opportunities and ones that got away.

“I was obviously thinking about a past relationship and wondering ‘what if’ like we do at times, after a relationship ends. That’s pretty clear from lyrics like ‘maybe in another world, our love would glow’ and ‘maybe in another era, it would be sublime, maybe in another world, in another time.’

“I was so overwhelmed with emotion during the taxi ride from the airport to the hotel, and even more so when I finally got to my hotel room, that I couldn’t actually put pen to paper and write, I couldn’t even find my phone in my luggage to type or record a voice note. It’s a little embarrassing but it’s the truth.”

The emotional origin of the track means there’s a compelling rawness about it. The lyrics stayed essentially unchanged from the original outpouring, even as the rest of the track was crafted.

Morrison took the song back to New York to record it at Dubway Studios (where the likes of Ed Sheeran and Adele have recorded), then the production came in Los Angeles. When he says it took a long road, he means it literally.

He seems to have taken well to the jet-set lifestyle of a modern recording artist since we first chatted to him earlier in 2025. Back then, we featured his debut single, The City, which was well-received. I called it “a strikingly memorable composition for a debut” in my review.

He’s taken that initial momentum and run with it, releasing an EP, Heartsplit, in September, on which Maybe In Another World features.

“When my first single came out back in January, it felt like I had accomplished something for myself. It wasn’t about streaming numbers or any of that, it was about proving to myself that I could take that first step. I was really proud of that.

“The EP was a different kind of milestone. Some of these songs had been living on my hard drive for a while. I kept going back to them because I love revisiting old demos, just to remember who I was when I wrote them. At some point, I realised I couldn’t really move forward unless I closed that chapter.”

Speaking of moving on, I was keen to find out what was next on Morrison’s journey.

“I’m so excited about sharing more music soon,” he says. “It always strikes me how we’re out here talking about the latest release, but behind the scenes, we’re already deep into the next thing — the stuff that feels more like where my head and heart are right now, sonically and emotionally. That’s just how it goes, I suppose.”

That new music includes a remix of one of his songs, set for release in January. He’s promising us a shift in sound, venturing into the electronic. He’s also worked with Stefan Storm, a Swedish producer who’s worked with the likes of Lady Gaga and Maroon 5.

“I’m looking forward to putting out more new music throughout the year, and if things align, showing up for a few live performances along the way,” Morrison adds.

He’s also thinking about expanding his catalogue linguistically. “Over the years, many of my collaborators have encouraged me to record in other languages, since I speak several.

“I always immediately rejected that idea, not entirely sure why — writing in English has just come so naturally to me since I was a kid. But lately I’ve been thinking: why limit my songwriting and music to just one language if the emotion can travel further?

“For me, it’s also about connection — even singing a song in someone’s language feels a little like saying, ‘I see you, I feel you.’ So, I finally gave in, as I was inspired to start writing in other languages, particularly in Spanish. I hope I get to record something in Spanish very soon. That’s something I’m truly thrilled about at the moment.”

I can’t wait to hear it all.
