You know you’re going to get some lowdown dirty rock from a band named Muddshovel, and you won’t be disappointed by their debut album.
By Graeme Smith
Little White Hair proves a strong storefront for the Irish rock band, giving us plenty to marvel over. From the confident swagger of opener Over The Line to the moody grunge of closer No Further, there’s plenty to get stuck into.
Muddshovel combine recognisable elements of classic rock with modern sensibilities to create a familiar yet unique sound with plenty of dimensions. Slower moments like Deep Fried Soul and title track Little White Hair show range, while there are some memorable riffs on display, such as mid-album highlight, Pity Party.
The lyrics show fire and defiance, as well as a little self-deprecating humour. Third Time Today is an early injection of folklore. Deep Fried Soul takes on the weighty topic of addiction. Little White Hair explores the unravelling that comes with isolation.
Muddshovel’s debut is a heck of an album and shows the band deserves a lot of attention. To celebrate its release, they will take to the stage for a launch show on 27 December 2025 at Benny’s Live Venue in Daly’s Bar, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. Tickets are €10.
Little White Hair is out now, and you can give it a listen below.
