A Spanish, synaesthesia-blessed artist who came to the UK at an early age, it’s a pleasure to welcome Luan Luan back to the blog with their latest single, Northern Lights.
By Graeme Smith
Brighton’s Luan Luan came to my attention early in 2025 thanks to a memorable collaboration with Tiiva. I was struck by the distinctiveness of their sound, combining their Spanish roots with UK queer pop sentiments.
Northern Lights further teases out more of that unique sound, even more given it’s a solo work. A playful bass lick gets us right into it before a bright indie pop arrangement takes over, complete with disco beat and jangly guitar.
Luan Luan’s vocal is the standout feature, flirty, expressive, and emotional. They tell a hedonistic story of finding freedom in nightlife, in clubs, as an escape from the daily struggles and social surveillance, tinged slightly by a sense of self-doubt.
As the track progresses, the groove and energy doesn’t let up, eventually arriving at a simmering bridge that sets up its big finish nicely.
If you’re looking to listen to something to banish the winter dreariness, then look no further than Northern Lights. With it, Luan Luan is cementing themself as a firm favourite on my playlist.
The single is out now, and you can listen to it below.
