Discovery: Junior gives boom bap a modern edge

Earlier this year, rapper Junior released Flyest City, a track that celebrated Chicago, USA, the city in which he grew up. Now, he’s hit our radar with his latest single, Mo Money.

Opening with a sense of mood and mystery, the track hits a steady boom bap groove during a vamping intro. When the vocals come in, they have an easy, effortless flow, delivering edgy, witty lyrics – they definitely come with a parental advisory.

As the track goes on, it induces a subconscious nodding of the head as the beat takes over. Instrumentally, it blends the familiar and the fresh. Among Junior’s influences are Jay-Z and Kanye West and fans of their style will find a lot to appreciate in Mo Money.

The Chicago-raised Junior began writing in 2017, moving into production to create his own mixtapes. Now, he’s based in the musical Mecca of Nashville and worked with producer Solar to create his latest work.

You can keep up to date with him by following him on Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

Mo Money is the lead single from his upcoming collaborative album Young & Handsome. The track is out now, and you can listen to it below.
