Brock Davis certainly isn’t new to the music world, or to us, and now he’s about to return with a new album.
By Graeme Smith
Nothing Lasts Forever is rich with classic, relatable storytelling told against a country folk rock backdrop and with a hidden profundity.
It is an album about impermanence. You wouldn’t blame Davis for having the concept on his mind when he wrote it, having received a health scare of his own. Here’s the thing: he wrote the album before the discovery.
That feels oddly prescient and knowing that changes how one listens to the album, with the emotion of each rumination elevated. I also think it speaks to the broad themes on display across the album’s fourteen tracks. Davis has captured a snapshot of life itself with this collection, telling a tale with each piece.
Title track Nothing Lasts Forever is the best example of this, unfolding as a conversation with a randomly encountered sage. It has echoes of Cat Stevens’ Father and Son in its philosophical lyrics.
The stories range from the gentle and heartwarming to the dark and edgy, with a suitable variety of musical compositions to match. Love in all its forms is a recurring theme. We have weddings, breakups, and relationships that go the distance.
Miracle On The Hudson is a particularly memorable moment, telling a very human story through the event in which a plane was famously landed safely on the Hudson River in New York.
There’s a timelessness to the lyrics across the album, simple, effective, and plucking at the imagination with their imagery.
Musically, Davis pairs classic Americana elements with gruff yet clear vocals. He has a pleasing tone, with each note holding plenty of emotion. Backing him are an impressive array of Nashville session musicians while recording and mixing comes from Grammy Award-winning engineer Zach Allen.
Born in a small mill town near Vancouver, Canada, Davis was raised on a diet of classic songwriters like Steve Earle and Bruce Springsteen. It was Jackson Browne that was to have the biggest influence on his musical direction, after he checked out a songbook from his local library.
Davis is now based in Santa Cruz, California. He returned to music in 2018 after a hiatus. Nothing Lasts Forever is his third album since his return.
