As the number of those seeking to divide feels ever more present in the world, it’s important to remember that there are those fighting in the opposite direction.

The music world is full of those who are seeking unity and reconciliation. It can often feel like a lofty, unachievable goal, but thanks to …this is not ok…, the new album by Matt Smith, it feels more reachable than ever.
That’s because the album feels so grounded. Smith has a style that borrows heavily from classic folk, country, rock, blues and soul, giving his nine-track collection an earthy feel. Smith delivers his messages pleasingly and with an authentic passion.
The album was written as a direct reaction to the result of the 2024 US presidential election, but it’s not an angry lashing out. Rather, it’s about providing a counterpoint to the narrative that their American federal administration is trying to weave.
“I care very deeply for the world and its people,” Smith says. “I knew I had to express what I was feeling, but not in a way that added to the fracture.”
It’s not all political. There are moments of raw vulnerability that speak of Smith as a person and songwriter too. Level Ground is a strong example. It’s stripped back soft rock in which he pours his heart out. Orphans speaks of aging and memory; I’ll Never Love Again ruminates on life-long commitment.
It all adds up to an emotionally rich collection.
When you look into Smith’s background, you start to understand why …this is not ok… feels so accomplished. It’s his 20th album. He’s put in some serious recording miles, and it shows. Each note feels well-crafted and are collectively classic.
Smith passes on this expertise as an educator at Six String Ranch as well as a recording artist. That might go some way to explain his outlook. The message is as much to the next generation of listeners as it is to the here and now.
Matt Smith is a hell of a songwriter with an ear for production detail and classic composition. His strength relies in his relatability, and his ability to put across a point of view without alienating.
