Mat Lazenby and Ed Heaton Capture Lifelong Friendship on New Vinyl‑Only Hip Hop Release

Long-time collaborators Mat Lazenby and Ed Heaton return with a new instrumental hip hop album that captures nearly four decades of shared musical obsession.

The pair first met at thirteen in remedial maths, bonding over golden‑era hip hop, dusty samples and long conversations about the records that shaped them. Now, that lifelong dialogue has crystallised into a limited‑edition vinyl‑only release from Milk Crate Recordings.

The album is rooted firmly in the duo’s shared heritage: chopped samples, warm analogue textures, layered strings and drums scuffed just enough to feel lived‑in. It’s the result of years spent DJing together, crate‑digging for forgotten breaks and swapping discoveries. Those instincts feed directly into the record’s sound—comfortably retro, proudly handcrafted, and glowing with nostalgia for the music and gigs that raised them.

As they’ve grown older, the need to document their friendship in musical form became impossible to ignore. The record emerged organically, often woven around trips they took together, guided by an almost wordless understanding built from decades of collaboration—Ed honing his production craft, Mat shaping the design and visual identity. The result feels less like a commercial project and more like a time capsule of connection.

The album is available exclusively on vinyl—100 heavyweight white copies only—via Earworm Records, The Archetype Store (York), Egg Records (Leeds), Holding Patterns (Leeds), and Bandcamp.
