Late Music York Welcomes the Amabile Clarinet Trio for a Night of Premieres

Late Music York returns on Friday 11 April 2026 with an enticing programme from the acclaimed Amabile Clarinet Trio, bringing together two new works, a rarely heard American gem, and music by York-based composers.

York clarinettist Lesley Schatzberger, cellist Nicola Tait Baxter and pianist Paul Nicholson will present a forward‑thinking programme that spotlights the trio’s conversational interplay.

Audiences can look forward to the UK premiere of Canzone Sospeso by David Lancaster, alongside a world premiere from composer David Power. Adding a playful twist to the evening is a newly transcribed set of Morris Dances by Steve Crowther—an unexpected reimagining of the tradition, minus the sticks and handkerchiefs.

At the heart of the concert sits a rare performance of Robert Muczynski’s Fantasy Trio, a work celebrated for its rhythmic urgency and lyrical depth yet seldom performed in the UK. The trio will also perform Alexander von Zemlinsky’s Trio in D minor, a richly expressive piece that, according to Schatzberger, may be receiving its first-ever performance in York.

Together, the programme showcases Late Music’s commitment to pairing brand new music with overlooked repertoire, offering listeners an intimate evening of discovery shaped by the clarinet trio’s unique timbral blend.

A pre-concert talk by David Lancaster begins at 6.45pm, accompanied by a complimentary glass of wine or juice.

Amabile Clarinet Trio will play at York Unitarian Chapel on Friday 11 April 2026.
