Live Review: Gifts From Crows Trio at The National Centre For Early Music

Last night saw neoclassical and jazz trio Gifts From Crows come to York for the first time ever, and where better for them to play but National Centre For Early Music. Inside the former church, York Calling hosted an intimate and absorbing concert, including support from local singer songwriter Kindelan.

By Graeme Smith

I first saw Kindelan at a one-off festival at the National Railway Museum where she played on a moving train. Over the years since, it’s fair to say we’ve been fans of hers here at York Calling, covering her live shows and recorded releases. Her sound has developed in that time too, now infused with elements of jazz that distinguishes her from a lot of other solo acoustic acts.

At the NCEM, she warmed up the crowd nicely with a set of her recent tracks that ranged from personal stories to outward-looking meditations on the state of the world. She’s got a wise head on her shoulders and I’ve no doubt there’s success in her future.

Gifts From Crows trio were joining us from the other end of the M62, Chester, and the crowd in York proved welcoming to their unique neoclassical sound, composed by Richard Lawrence who played keys. As a trio, the sound is augmented by jazzy drums, ethereal electronica, brass and woodwind, but none of the distinctiveness of the original compositions is lost.

A feast for the eyes and well as the ears, the set was accompanied by animations and videos which hauntingly brought the music to life. I was certainly mesmerised. Having been a fan of Gifts From Crows for a few years now, it was wonderful to see the live renditions. They’re just starting out with the live performances. Last night at the NCEM could easily be an “I was there” moment for those who came down.

Kindelan and Gifts From Crows Trio played at The National Centre For Early Music, York on Sunday 8 October 2023.
