When we last encountered Ævina she was in her “Ukulelian” era combining sci-fi elements with the earthly ukulele. Her new single, don’t wanna be a wannabe, sees her embrace a new sound.
By Graeme Smith
The single sees her take full creative control, self-producing the commercial release. It somehow makes her uniqueness even more unique as she grapples with imposter syndrome and the ‘pain of being perceived’ through an emotional dance track.
Opening light and percussive, don’t wanna be a wannabe builds slowly with looping rhythms and crystalline vocals. The groove, built in her bedroom using Logic, Apple Loops, and Splice samples, is insatiable as Ævina delivers her vulnerable story. The anxiety is overcome gradually by a desire to simply dance.
Ævina hasn’t lost her Ukulelian persona but her new single shows how expansive her universe can be. She has plenty more in store for us, adding more chapters to the project. A European tour is also on the horizon for the Jersey City, USA-based artist.
If you want to keep up to date with all she’s doing, you can by following her on Spotify, Soundcloud, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and Bandcamp.
Don’t wanna be a wannabe is out now, and you can listen to it below.
