There’s something genuinely special happening at York Barbican on May 2nd, and it’s far more than just another tribute night.

Weetwood Mac have earned a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling sound-alike celebrations of Fleetwood Mac, but what makes this show stand out is the story behind the musicians on stage. At the core of the band are Ellen Smith, Chris Quick, James Warrender and Gary Stewart, originally of Ellen and the Escapades, and joined by Sam Wood and Jeff Schneider — both of whom have also been part of the Escapades lineup over the years.

For this show, that history comes full circle.

The support set sees Ellen and the Escapades reforming, something they haven’t properly done in over ten years, it’s a rare chance to experience the band that first made waves with their indie-folk sound in Leeds in 2009. Ellen and the Escapades quickly rose to national attention, even winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition before going their separate ways in 2015.

Since then, fans have only seen fragments of that original chemistry — until now.

There’s serious pedigree here too. Sam Wood brings his guitar experience from The Dead Collective, Black Star Riders and Wayward Sons, while Gary Stewart continues to perform his own material and leads his Paul Simon ‘Graceland’ show — which plays the Barbican the night before.

What you get on May 2nd is effectively two bands in one: the original, heartfelt songwriting of Ellen and the Escapades, followed by a full transformation into Weetwood Mac, delivering the timeless Fleetwood Mac catalogue with remarkable sound-alike authenticity.

It’s a reunion, a celebration, and a rare glimpse into the roots of a band that has grown into something much bigger. Nights like this don’t come around often.
