Karen Salicath Jamali Turns Her Unique Voice To Folk In Mary’s Song

Regular readers will know Karen Salicath Jamali and her extraordinary story. Yet, her recently released single, Mary’s Song, may surprise you.

By Graeme Smith

Its origin story is familiar. Jamali states that the song came to her fully formed during a moment of quiet reflection, much as her many, many compositions since her near-death experience have.

Yet while we’ve grown used to her piano melodies, Mary’s Song ventures into the world of folk, and a vocal layer shows us her ability to write lyrics alongside instrumental composition. She labels the track “Quintessence Music” inspired by the ancient idea of a fifth element beyond earth, water, air, and fire.

Her brand of folk a traditional one, invoking the greats of the ‘70s like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. The lyrics spill over a looping guitar melody, vibrant and spiritual. Together, they create a beautiful narrative.

Karen Salicath Jamali’s remarkable story and remarkable voice continues through Mary’s Song. If you want to keep up to date with all she’s doing you can by heading to her website, and by following her on Facebook, X, Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Bandcamp, and Songkick.
