As technology advances and the music industry moves into realms that are more artificial, there will always be a countermovement back to the traditional and authentic.
By Graeme Smith
You can count Lancaster Rayne as part of that movement. His sound brings together longstanding threads of country and rock birthed from America’s Deep South. Originally from Texas, the artist now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Rayne describes his music as part of a self-defined “High Desert Grit” and you get an immediate sense of what he means when you listen to his latest single, Lonely Cowboy Song. When listening you can easily picture worn leather, stubbled chins, and saloons with sawdust on the floor.
Cantering percussion sets the early pace before edgy Telecaster guitar comes in. It spills out a groovy melody until Rayne’s gritty vocals arrive. They deliver lyrics full of the kind of imagery you’d expect from the genre, but with a maximalist twist and never trapped by nostalgia. An undercurrent of irony cements the joy of it all, keeping things fresh.
Rayne throws off the restraints for a soaring, anthemic chorus which provides some catharsis for the downtrodden and a renewed second verse hits nicely. The chorus returns, ready for a singalong which takes us to the close. There, the Telecaster returns in high spirits, echoing the track’s opening with some beautiful symmetry.
I love the sense of throwback that Lonely Cowboy Song gives us. I heard shades of ZZ Top and ‘90s country as I listened, all packaged with a modern sensibility that refuses to follow trends or rely on machines for polish.
Rayne has a mantra for his music, “I will not seek gatekeeper approval. I will not serve your algorithms. I will not fit neatly into your categories. I do not seek celebrity— I strive to connect,” and that’s exactly what you get from his music: connection.
We’ve reached the point where an overreliance on technology risks us falling into complete homogenisation. Music platforms that have sucked up all that is out there only to serve us what it thinks we’ll like (or what their paymasters want us to hear). Only deliberate exploration will save us, and Lancaster Rayne is a great place to start.
His style might not suit everyone, but those who get it will find a lot to love. I hope to get better acquainted with him as his art progresses.
If you want to keep up to date with all he’s doing, you can by following him on Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, and TikTok.
