Sometimes you don’t have to say a lot to make a powerful statement. Rumour’s new EP, Limerence, runs for less than fifteen minutes, but makes an impression.

For us, it’s our first impression too, and I must say it’s a good one. It’s hard to stand out in the alternative pop genre but the Maryland, USA-based artist has just done that with this record balancing grit and approachability deftly.
Rumour has been making music since the age of seventeen, winning the first singing competition he entered. As well as writing and singing, he’s also a producer and sound engineer.
Limerence explores the emotional journey from infatuation and longing through to acceptance and letting go, all set in those vulnerable hours after midnight where hurt and healing begin to blend.
Ironically, that journey starts with brightness.
Opener Something Again bristles with an intoxicating upbeat electronica before smooth and heartfelt vocals come in. They deliver lyrics that are lush with forbidden desire, painting a picture that leaves nothing unsaid. It’s a story of a secret hookup and the resulting emotional impact, shading that instrumental brightness with nuanced shadows.
The vibrant electronic pop continues, drawing on influences from as far back as the ‘80s and ‘90s. Summer Nights has a distinctly 21st century feel, however, referencing post-millennium fads in an anthem oozing with nostalgia.
If the first two tracks of the EP set it very much in the lively electronic space, the remainder represents a change of pace. The shift feels natural, and needed, giving us a beautiful transition and Rumour a chance to display their range.
I Adore You is a slowed-down, hard-hitting ballad with Latin guitar licks. Never Really is theatrical and piano-led. The latter is a highlight only surpassed by cathartic closer Lullaby. Rumour saves his most profound moment for last, stripping back to and acoustic bed before finishing strong.
Rumour has been compared to contemporaries like Dermot Kennedy, JP Saxe, and Khalid and if those artists are your thing, you’re going to love what they’re doing. The comparisons aren’t perfect though; they’ve got plenty of their own uniqueness too and the ability to express it concisely, not to mention an engaging voice and an ear for authentic storytelling.
