Billboard Top 10 recording artist and songwriter Grant Maloy Smith’s upcoming album WILD WEST: AMERICAN STORIES is set to release on 18 September 2026.

The album, featuring eighteen songs, is also accompanied by a book with the same title, written and illustrated by Smith.

This album revolves around the expansion of the United States and traces the journey from the rise of the transcontinental railroad to the evolution of cowboys. This interweaving of history, storytelling and music creates an atmospheric listening experience.

Opener Go West, Boys throws listeners into the country and western-centred tone of the album, beginning with a guitar riff followed by raw, clear vocals. The song serves as a great introduction for setting the scene for listeners, with atmospheric lyrics: “The streets are hard / the mud is deep / I’m headed West / I’m on my feet”, highlighting the stark reality of the 1800s in the USA and the hope that moving provided.

Voices on the Wind is a more whimsical track compared to the previous, with soft yet strong vocals about connection with the surrounding nature. This song is reflective and retrospective. Come and Take It goes back to the first with more Western narrative about defending land and the disputes that followed.

Tear Trail is more melancholic, with haunting and sombre lyrics that portray the realities behind the American expansion. Lyrics such as “look at what they done with the wrong end of a gun” and imagery of death and suffering provide a deeper level of depth to Smith’s work.

Wagon Train returns to the energetic tone of the album, followed by Good Lord, My God, which acts as an honest prayer and provides insight into the consciousness of the character. This sincerity is contrastingly accompanied by catchy guitar and drum instrumentals.

Elizabeth My Woman is a mournful yet romantic track about grief: “I see you in the sunrise on the wide Missouri plain … / I see you in the valleys stretching out for miles”. Kill the Cowboys tells the story of a man’s life in a haunting, wistful, soft song. Westward Dreams closes the album and provides the perfect conclusion as it encapsulates the spirit of the entire narrative in a positive yet nostalgic note: “We are pilgrims once again.”
