Chronicling the raw aftermath of personal tragedy, Open Blue has landed on our radar through their powerful EP, Songs About Other People.
By Graeme Smith
Open Blue is a New York-based contemporary folk band led by singer-songwriter Evan Moore. Moore originally hails from Texas, and the scene there, alongside his love for the 60s folk revival, shapes their sound.
Songs About Other People is a record that puts songwriting first. Philosophical and storytelling lyrics paint pictures in your mind as the instrumentals vary. Things open quietly acoustic through Other People (intro). A gentle, looping guitar riff accompanies Moore’s soft, soulful vocals.
From there, the energy ups slightly for the country grit of Five Years and stays up for the cantering, nostalgic Corpus Christi. There, the lyrics reflect on the impermanence of life and make the track stand out.
Derelict returns to the intimate during a warm and hazy reflection which is demo-like in quality. Ballad ends the journey with a long, lingering and country folk finish.
