70 Years Young at The Basement

An all-star gig in York to celebrate Neil Young’s 70th Birthday has been organised by Stan Smith and Ann Dunford of alt-country duo Mulholland. The special concert will be held at 8pm on Thursday 12 November in The Basement and will help raise funds for Accessible Arts & Media.

The concert will feature a stellar line-up of York musicians, including Ian Ravenscroft, David Ward-MacLean, Rob Wilson (The Mothers), Boss Caine, Chris Helme & Band, The Blueprints/Buccaneers and Mulholland, all of whom are giving their time and playing for free.

In the same way that Neil Young organises concerts in aid of The Bridges Project in the USA, this event will be raising funds for the incredible work of York-based charity Accessible Arts & Media (AAM). Members of AAM’s Hands & Voices Singing and Signing Choir will open the night with a special interpretation of one of their favourite Neil Young songs.

Ann Dunford explained:

“I am delighted to say that The Sylvia & Colin Shepherd Charitable Trust are sponsoring the venue costs, which means that 100 per cent of the money raised through ticket sales and on the night will go to AAM.

“The evening promises some great interpretations of the artists’ favourite Neil Young songs, along with some fabulous musical collaborations.

“We are really excited to have been able to gather together such great York musicians to celebrate one of the greatest musicians of our age and, at the same time, to be able to raise funds for and work with Accessible Arts & Media.  This really is an event not to be missed.”

Rose Kent, managing director of At Accessible Arts & Media, explained:

“We’re passionate about music and its ability to cross barriers. That’s why it’s at the heart of so much of the work we do. We’d like to say a huge thank you to Mulholland for supporting us in this brilliant way. Our apprentices can’t wait to perform one of our favourite Neil Young songs, with their unique Hands & Voices twist!”

Accessible Arts & Media is an award-winning charity that champions and celebrates the skills and talents of young people and adults with disabilities through a range of pioneering and inclusive creative projects.

AAM’s Hands & Voices is a 50-strong singing and signing choir that has won national and international acclaim for its innovative approach to making music more accessible. Members of the Hands & Voices Apprentice Training Programme, one of the first initiatives in the UK to train learning-disabled musicians as workshop leaders, will be performing on the night and teaching the audience how to sing and sign along with a classic Neil Young song.
