York Calling are proud to present a little slice of folk and Americana heaven. On 9 March at The recently revamped Crescent Community Venue, touring singer/songwriter Lowri Evans will visit York in support of her newly-released 6th album. Support on the night comes from local duo Mulholland.
Lowri’s previous album, released in 2013, featured Martin Simpson and Andy Cutting, both BBC Radio 2 Folk winners. The single from this album was play listed on BBC Radio Wales and played on BBC Radio 2. Last year, she recorded a session for Bob Harris and performed a mini tour in Chicago and Nashville. She was also invited to perform an official showcase at the Folk Alliance in Kansas City.
Festivals she has played include Cambridge Folk, Wychwood, Greenman, Summertyne Americana, Celtic Connections. Artists she has supported include Cara Dillon, Seth Lakeman, Steve Tilston, Chris Smither, Jez Lowe, and Amy Wadge.
Her new album features collaborations with Henry Priestman, Pete Riley and Sam Genders.
York-based folk duo Mulholland consists of Stan Smith and Ann Dunford, both stalwarts of the York music scene. They are frequently gigging their own style of bluesy Americana, and notably arranged and performed during Neil Young’s 70th Birthday celebrations at The Basement in November.
“The first bluesy chords of Come On Back evokes a lonesome world, but one on an edge with a lively, driven beat. A signature harmony of gruff, Americana voices run throughout. Standout vocals supported by an atmospheric build-up of strings and percussion make Ghosts and Shadows compelling listening.” – Graeme Smith, review of Mulholland’s Ghosts and Shadows EP
Their new album, North Country, is due to be released at Easter 2016.
Tickets are £8 in advance, available here, or £10 on the door.
