Summer nights hot up at York Theatre Royal!
As the sun goes down, things will be hotting up at York Theatre Royal with two weeks of great food, live music, theatre and spoken word at the first Summer Sessions in July.
Things kick off with a free gig from the New York Brass Band (4th July, 8pm). A mix of some of the region’s finest musicians armed with an arsenal of percussion, sax, trumpets, trombones and sousaphone will be delivering the sounds of New Orleans and New York. The Guardian called them ‘a must see genre-splitting band’.
This year’s TakeOver team from the theatre take their festival theme Speak Out to its most literal meaning, presenting an evening of provocative, outspoken poetry and spoken word performances at the Speak Out’ Slam (5th July, 7.30pm).
A hot summer evening of live music, flowing ale, rollicking blues piano and comedy cabaret with an eclectic mix of rollicking blues piano and comedy cabaret in the theatre’s bar comes courtesy of Adam Sowter & Co’s Hootenanny (11th July, 7.30pm). Featuring Jonny Holbek, The Receivers, George Stagnell, Kelly Ann Bolland, Richard Bayton, Kjartan Poskitt and many more, alongside boogie-woogie piano man Adam Sowter at the keyboard.
York’s emerging theatre-makers and performers are off to Edinburgh Fringe but offer a chance for local audiences to see the shows before the festival crowds in the Edinburgh Fringe Previews (12th July, 7.30pm). Sophie Shepherd will be MCing the evening featuring KIFLi Theatre, flattered collective, York DramaSoc and The Herd.
There will be great food too. Clucking Oinks (6th and 7th July, 8pm), the finest authentic American street food trader in town, promise “It’s so damn good, you’ll think you’re in Texas” with the All American Fried Chicken Burger on the menu at £17.50 per person.
Haxby’s most talked about restaurant Origin (13th July, 8pm) is back in town for an exclusive York Theatre Royal pop-up with a brand new menu created by Chef Philip Veal especially for the night. The menu is £35 per person, and that includes a glass of fizz on arrival.
The curtain comes down on the Summer Sessions with Wine and Tapas (14th July, 7.30pm) offering the chance to sample YTR’s specially curated wine list and enjoy a plate of tapas perfectly matched to each one. This will be £15 per person.
Clucking Oinks, Origin and Wine & Tapas sessions can be booked through the box office on 01904 623568 and online at www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
All other events are free.
The bar will be open from 6 – 11pm during the Summer Sessions from 4th – 14th July.
