Interview: Underwing

We recently had the opportunity to chat to a bunch of bands from the Rogue PR label. Our latest one was with Norwegian rock band Underwing where we found out about their recent releases, influences and love of high-octane serenades.

Interview by Jane Howkins

How is 2019 treating you so far?
2019 has been awesome! We’ve never played so many shows as we have so far this year and we’ve never released as much music either! So 2019 has been incredible and our most eventful year yet.

Have you released any music so far this year? If so, what can you tell us about that?
In February, we released The Hoof which just hit 100,000 streams on Spotify! We followed that up with our second EP, Spirals, which we released in June. This was our first vinyl release and we’ve sold every single copy on our release tour. In September, we released a cover of Tool’s legendary classic, The Pot, to celebrate the fact that Tool finally released an album after 13 years of waiting. We’re gearing up to release more music this year, so keep your eyes peeled.

Are you working on any new music at the moment? What are you working on, and when will it be released?
We’re just finished recording a new version of the title track of our newest EP, Spirals, which will be released now in November. We also have a lot of almost finished songs that we’re throwing around in the rehearsal room in order to perfect them for the studio. We have so many ideas that we’re practically bursting at the seams.

Have you got any upcoming tours planned? If so, where are you playing and where are you looking forward to going most?
We just finished a tour this summer, and this fall we’re going to play some more cities here in Norway. We love going new places and next year we’re planning to take the touring to an international level. Let us know if you want us to play in your city.

Who/what has influenced you the most as musicians?
We’re influenced by a lot of different music. As a band, people often hear a lot of Tool, Alice in Chains and Black Sabbath in our songwriting. That’s only natural, because they’re all a pretty big influence for us. We also listen to music like Steven Wilson, Alt-j, Extreme and Motorhead. So we take inspiration wherever we can find it.

What have you been listening to recently that you can recommend to our readers?
We’ve been listening to bands like Vorbid, Kal-El, Vanvidd and Kurt Inge Dale. We can recommend all of them for people who like Thrash metal, stoner metal, black metal and chill Norwegian tunes.

Why do you think people should pick up one of your records or come and see you live, and what can people expect from one of your shows?
People should pick up one of our records because it’s a product of five individuals who have poured their heart and souls into the musical expression that is Underwing. Combined, we have over five decades of musical dedication and our music is a result of that passion.

People who come and see us live should expect to be surprised by our music, in that it encompasses a lot of different genres, twists and turns. They should also expect to be serenaded by a high-octane, highly energetic live-act that has dedicated countless hours to make sure their craft is felt and as good as it possibly can be.

Any last words for the fans?
