EP Review: Cold Culprits – EPisode 1

Cold Culprits (real name Andy Watson) is a local act we’ve featured before on York Calling, running the rule over single We Will Bleed and including Sweet Apathy in our podcast. The latter features on his new EP, EPisode 1 along with a diverse collection of four other tracks.

By Graeme Smith

It’s difficult to label Andy’s sound. In the broadest sense, it’s indie rock but not restrictively so. He draws in influences from lots of different genres in this EP. Opening track Full Moon, Empty Promises is bass-driven indie rock but for those who like electric guitar riffs there are plenty of those too.

Ribcage Beats ventures towards the pop end of the rock spectrum with an upbeat tempo and a lively, layered melody before Here Comes The Neighbourhood slows things down with acoustic guitar and keys. Things are wrapped up with the aforementioned Sweet Apathy and the almost industrial World On A Wire.

All in all it’s a good effort from a promising local act. York has a booming indie rock scene so I’m sure Cold Culprits will find more than a few fans around here.

EPisode 1 is out 11 December 2020. For more info head to the Cold Culprits website.
