Discovery: Maya Law

Maya Law is an acoustic artist from Norwich who has been supported by the likes of Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1 and Jamie Cullum on his jazz show on BBC Radio 2. Her new track Hitchhiking is a wonderful example of her lyricism and soulful vocals.

By Graeme Smith

Hitchhiking starts with an isolated, repeating vocal refrain that sets the scene. A gentle acoustic guitar riff joins Maya’s vocals while the story of getting through tough times unfolds through an extended hitchhiking metaphor. The arrangement builds, with bass and harmonies joining the mix creating a lush, relaxed atmosphere that washes over you.

It’s easy to see why Maya is getting such support from such industry heavyweights. There really is something special about her. Check out Hitchhiking below. If you want to hear more like Maya check out our Raw Stuff playlist on Spotify.
