Orcas Are Dolphins are an American neo-jazz quintet whose winding and complex new piece Floral Aura caught my attention.
By Graeme Smith
At just over five minutes long, Floral Aura is something of an odyssey, yet it never feels overlong or too bogged-down. The melody is in a state of constant flux, with the tempo rising and falling seemingly spontaneously and its instrumental and electronic elements coming and going. It feels like traditional jazz through its use of noodling solos, but that’s about where its traditional roots end. Mostly, it feels future-facing.
And that’s exactly Orcas Are Dolphin’s intention – to brave uncharted musical waters. Well, they’re certainly perfectly-placed do so. I can’t wait to hear where they take their sound next.
