James Chelliah is a British hip hop artist who describes his sound as “existential indie rap.” I’m not sure I could describe it better myself, as evidenced by a his new track, a collaboration with Cam May and Grace Joyram, called Something, at least.
By Graeme Smith
James’s brand of rap is quite unlike anything else. The instrumentals are stripped back and acoustic, with a whimsical groove and whistling aplenty. His vocal delivery verges on spoken word and his lyrics, a reflection on isolation, are chock full of poetry. As the track develops, elements of jazz and electronica creep in, but the track never loses its laidback vibe.
Something, at least really is something special. I just knew I had to share it with you. You can check it out below.
