Discovery: Box of Matches

Box of Matches are an indie rock four-piece based in Martinez, USA. Their self-titled track Box of Matches was recently released on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the sense of nostalgia that comes with the occasion. I gave it a listen.

Though a rock band, Box of Matches strips things back for the band. It opens with acoustic guitar and subtle bass. What’s most captivating about the track, though, are the vocals, sung by the band’s lead guitarist Kendra. It marks a departure for the band, whose songs are usually written and sung by rhythm guitarist Aaron. It’s a sound that really works for them.

Taking inspiration from acts such as The Strokes, Car Seat Headrest and Bombay Bicycle Club, Box of Matches are definitely ones to watch in the indie rock scene. I’ll certainly be returning to them.
