London-based, Finnish alternative pop artist Emmi Maaria has graced our pages a few times now since I first discovered her music back in May. Her latest is the third part of a series exploring the female narrative, drawing on Finnish folklore. It’s called On Foot I Wandered Through The Solar System.

The track has the kind of delightful and interesting style that I’ve not come to expect from Emmi’s music. There’s a brightness to its composition, but also a rawness. The strings are tight and urgent, but combined with horns, heavy percussion and vocal harmonies, the whole piece becomes stratospheric.

The lyrics are inspired by the poetic works of Edith Södergan, and musically Emmi draws inspiration from composer Ida Moberg, a female musician forgotten by history. Emmi uses these influences, not just to enhance her style but to honour the memory of the artists, and the bring them to light. We thank her for it.
